Fire Science Technology

The Fire Science Technology program at Lake Land College has a wide variety of classes addressing today’s rapidly expanding and constantly progressing fire service industry.  This program was designed to give students academic background and initial training for careers in fire fighting.  It will prepare students for entry level employment in the fire service field.  Students are trained in fire suppression, prevention, and investigation techniques.  A firefighter may be expected to perform many duties including, but not limited to, fighting fires, maintaining fire equipment and educating the public about fire prevention.  Students are also prepared to react correctly to emergency situations. The fire science program is also intended for individuals currently employed in the fire service field who are seeking additional training.

A genuine sense of duty to one’s community is essential for someone to excel in the firefighting career.  It takes dedication, desire and a strong will to enter the firefighter or emergency care personnel fields.  Yet the rewards are many, and those who secure jobs are deeply committed to their work.

Whether you are just starting out or are already employed in the Fire Science industry, Lake Land College offers classes in a flexible schedule that will help you attain your goals in this exciting and rewarding field.

Excellent health, physical stamina, agility, good vision, stability, mental alertness, and a mechanical aptitude are all needed.  An ability to work well with others and to follow orders is important.

Few careers may be as physically challenging but deeply rewarding as fire service.  New technology and firefighting tactics make it an especially dynamic and exciting career choice.

Upon completion of this program, you will be awarded an Associate in Applied Science Degree.   Completing this degree will allow a student to transfer to SIU-C Fire Service Management with no loss of credit and make them eligible for the Capstone program without additional course work.

All fire courses are a part of the FESHE model core curriculum as designed by the FESHE Associate Degree Curriculum Committee.

Most fire departments currently seek candidates who have been trained as Emergency Medical Technicians and/or Paramedics.  These courses are also offered at Lake Land College through the Emergency Medical Services program.  For more information, refer to the Paramedical Services and Emergency Medical Services link on this website.
