History of General Education Assessment

During the 1998-1999 academic year the general education committee examined the goals of the general education program at Lake Land.  Our first task was to assess the current goals to see if they were still appropriate for Lake Land and our students.  Using the the general education component of the Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) as a guide we made a few minor changes and added one goal. These revised goals with objectives indicate the skills and traits our students should possess after they pass through LLC's transfer program.

What are "prompts"?

The General Education Committee has chosen to use “prompts” to assess student learning in certain general education goals.  Typically a “prompt” consists of an exhibit, such as a  brief article, essay, quote, or picture, accompanied by questions based on the content of the exhibit.  Students will write an essay in response to the questions. Prompts are administered in certain general education classes with a high number of sophomores.

Prompts have been designed to measure the following general education goals:

Goal #3:
Analyze the impact of decisions on civilization.  a) Appraise current social issues from an historical perspective.  b) Appraise current social issues from a scientific perspective.

Goal #5:
Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of change.  a) Discuss current human problems.  b) Appraise the impact of personal decisions on the global environment.

Goal #7:
Survey major human value and belief systems.
  a) Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of values and beliefs on societal dynamics.  b) Approach ethical dilemmas analytically.

Goal #8:
Understand human interdependence.
  a) Recognize the relationship between the environment and human health.  b) Understand concepts of social and civic responsibility.

In addition, beginning in spring semester 2005 these prompts will be scored a second time in order to measure general education outcome 1a:

Goal #1: Demonstrate an understanding of symbolic communication.  a) Write a formal essay with a clear sense of purpose and attention to the practices of formal writing.
